SURFACE GAWKERS WILL NOT UNDERSTAND

Updated: Jul 30, 2019

Iceberg peaks rise rigid, high, and shining,

and not reflect cold underwater past,

Surface viewers view the hard horizon,

and do not ponder sunken, unvoiced mass.

Gawkers gawk with nodding heads of knowing,

and yet know little of the frost within,

The iceberg seems to float along, buoying,

The heap below is stubborn, hard, and grim.

Steeples rise above the city, shining,

and not reflect cold, under-loving past,

Surface viewers view the crossed horizon,

and do not see which charities don’t last. (Aug. 2013)
